When working with large spools of Aurifil, the bottom flange (or spool cap) is removable. Carefully remove the flange to reveal the start of the thread underneath. It’s also a great place to tuck the thread away for travel or storage.

When considering small spools of Aurifil, carefully drag the tip of a pin in the space between the thread and the top or bottom of the spool. The thread beginning is generally tucked in.

All sizes and weights of Aurifil cotton threads are cross-wound. Notice the ‘X’-shaped pattern created by the layers of thread on the spool. This criss-cross winding allows the thread to unwind smoothly and efficiently when drawn from the top of the spool, rather than from the side.

With this in mind, regardless of whether your machine has a vertical or horizontal spool pin, it’s recommended to draw the thread over the top of the spool.

For machines with horizontal spool pins, secure the thread with the smallest spool cap available and draw the thread to the left to the first machine thread guide.

For machines with vertical pins, if there is no thread guide directly above the vertical pin, consider using an external thread stand or placing the thread in a heavy glass or mug behind the machine. This option works perfectly for spools and cones.

Aurifil’s 100% Egyptian cotton thread is best preserved when stored away from dust and direct sunlight. Exposure to sunlight can weaken the fibers and fade colors over time, while dust can settle into the thread and affect stitch quality.

Ideal storage tips:

• Keep threads in a cool, dry space with moderate temperatures
• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight
• Use closed containers or cases to minimize dust buildup
