Welcome to the 2026 edition of our Aurifil x FreeSpirit Scrap Bundles-- Drop #8 is here!

Each scrap bundle contains one big box filled with fabric scraps + 7 small spools of Aurifil 40wt thread. For this drop, you get to choose your scrappy adventure: regular fabric strips or selvage strips. Both versions are the same price, and both are packed with bold, bright, rainbow-inspired color.

This drop’s scraps come from the family of brands under Jaftex, FreeSpirit Fabrics’ parent company, including Studio E and Henry Glass. Bundle pricing is based solely on the cost of thread + handling. No charge has been added for the scraps. We feel strongly about sharing the inherent generosity of FreeSpirit and the Jaftex family of brands and are confident you’ll give these fabrics a glorious new life. We can’t wait to see the beauty that you put out into the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

View all FAQs
Where do I find the start of the thread on a new spool?

When working with large spools of Aurifil, the bottom flange (or spool cap) is removable. Carefully remove the flange to reveal the start of the thread underneath. It’s also a great place to tuck the thread away for travel or storage.

When considering small spools of Aurifil, carefully drag the tip of a pin in the space between the thread and the top or bottom of the spool. The thread beginning is generally tucked in.

For visual reference, check out Aurifil Thread Basics on our blog.

How should my spool be placed on my machine for best results?

All sizes and weights of Aurifil cotton threads are cross-wound. Notice the ‘X’-shaped pattern created by the layers of thread on the spool. This criss-cross winding allows the thread to unwind smoothly and efficiently when drawn from the top of the spool, rather than from the side.

With this in mind, regardless of whether your machine has a vertical or horizontal spool pin, it’s recommended to draw the thread over the top of the spool.

For machines with horizontal spool pins, secure the thread with the smallest spool cap available and draw the thread to the left to the first machine thread guide.

For machines with vertical pins, if there is no thread guide directly above the vertical pin, consider using an external thread stand or placing the thread in a heavy glass or mug behind the machine. This option works perfectly for spools and cones.

What is the best way to store Aurifil thread?

Aurifil’s 100% Egyptian cotton thread is best preserved when stored away from dust and direct sunlight. Exposure to sunlight can weaken the fibers and fade colors over time, while dust can settle into the thread and affect stitch quality.

Ideal storage tips:
  • Keep threads in a cool, dry space with moderate temperatures
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight
  • Use closed containers or cases to minimize dust buildup

Not thrilled with this at all
I get the idea but much of these fabric strips were more like garbage and would be pretty hard to use
Some very tiny pieces and again more like throw away trim
I believe re-thinking this would be a good idea for future offerings
I feel taken advantage of.
Very expensive 7 spools of thread which I am an extreme fan

I have been lucky enough to get many of these and have been thrilled because have been able to use 80/90 percent of fabric and add to my thread collection, because I am doing an ongoing Timna Tarr project that these are perfect for but this one I could only use maybe 20/30 percent of the selvedges that were sent. I knew they were selvedges but was surprised that 70/80 percent were less than 1/2 inch. It wouldn't stop me from buying again you did specify sevedges but was my very first disappointment! Maybe I am wrong but I think the price has gone up,too. I get the fabric is an extra and I am an AURIFIL thread lover so the thread alone is worth it but I don't get to choose the thread colors do I? Love the concept maybe not just Kaffe but Tula if you are getting from Free Spirit?? just an idea!
